Egalitarian Relationships, Equal Parenting
An excerpt from Dr. Jo-Ann Finkelstein's new book, Sexism & Sensibility
We’re excited to feature an excerpt from Dr. Jo-Ann Finkelstein’s new book, Sexism & Sensibility: Raising Empowered, Resilient Girls in the Modern World. Dr. Finkelstein is a clinical psychologist with over two decades of experience helping girls find resilience in the face of toxic messages about beauty, sex, and femininity. She draws on real stories from her clinical practice to delve into the effects of sexism on girls, as well as provide a guide to proactively parenting girls.
In this illuminating excerpt, Dr. Finkelstein explores how to disrupt the intergenerational transmission of sexism by creating more egalitarian relationships in parenting. Through a poignant example of a couple with gender stereotypical relationship behaviors, she emphasizes the need to challenge conventions to break the cycle of gender norms and inherited sexism.
You can also follow Dr. Finkelstein’s Substack, the Feminist Parent, to learn more about raising children with values support gender equality.
Enjoy!
