With Trump in office, conservative groups are going on the offensive against abortion providers, abortion rights activists, and women who end their pregnancies.
Thank you for this Jill. It’s just so damn infuriating. I keep remembering Kirstin Luker’s 1980s (?) book on abortion & antiabortion activists. It’s obviously NOT about the unborn children. It’s about restricting women’s life horizons: breed baby breed.
My favorite demonstration chant from my college days: 2-4-6-8 Smash the family church & state. For a while I was waffling on this … thinking families … I love mine. But it’s Family with a capital F that is holding us back … Family … dad/wage earner, Mom/caretaker is atavistic.
Only weak, scared, insecure men go after women when they can’t get what they want, that’s what’s going on here- as well as rich, GOP leaning white men and women scared of minorities as well as out groups like transgender/LBGTQ+ groups, Hispanic men all being fearmongered as r*pists at the border who cross it, view themselves as superior to disabled people etc., to be blunt.
There’s two years before a check can be put on any of this, but given what Trump has planned to be appointed, I feel pretty good about Dems’ odds in 2026- the real issue is how many will suffer and die in the interim, and the >50% who didn’t vote for Trump will suffer in at least some shape or form for the 49.9% who did regardless imo.
I think they will be held, but under intense voter suppression efforts, under intense pressure to scare away voters from the ballot box, etc-- to clarify.
It won't be easy whatsoever, however, the only bright side is there are several Blue states with trifectas present to hold them off for at least 2 years to some degree-- but 2026 is the only way any check can be placed on the fascists and misogynists at Team Red MAGA, make no mistake about that imo. By 2028, it'll be a cemented rise of the fascists for certain if Reps hold their trifecta by then (as it is, one reason I held my nose for Harris besides preserving abortion rights for women/safe havens, as well as trans people from harm, was the SCOTUS which is going to become even more of a Conservative majority- personally, I can't stand her and would even take Hillary over her and Joe if I have to pick one of the last 3 nominees much as many hate her nor do I really like her either, but also have the same low opinion of Biden etc. etc. across the board-- never liked our probable King incoming Trump btw, fwiw, to say the least).
Yes, exactly. I grew up in this movement and one of the first reasons why I questioned it was because of what you said here: they want to outlaw all abortions, and they're willing to sacrifice democracy to do it. Some of them are not just willing to sacrifice it, but also absolutely want an authoritarian theocracy.
Of course, the same folks fly the American flag and call themselves patriots.
It's called being scared, insecure men afraid of women, point blank, if they were really the macho tough guys they claim to be they could win against them on even ground in a fair fight based on ideals and debating policies, temperament, character etc-- but they're not interested in that, it's about control imho.
I enjoy reading comments about Gaetz written before he withdrew his name for consideration but am concerned that they provide ideas for the next nominee (Judge Judy anyone?) to use.

We’re in an era of serious, backlash misogyny.

The real issue is IF we will have elections in 2026 at all.

It's definitely about control. And that goes for the women too. There are still a lot of them in that movement.

Judge Jeanine for the Supreme Court when? /s
I was just being snarky. But at this point I wouldn't put anything past the orange maniac.

Great news, Gaetz is out- he knew McCarthy would expose him, 100%, the AG won't be him-- at least SOMETHING good for once in our hellscape.
