About

This is a newsletter from Jill Filipovic, a journalist, lawyer, and author of OK Boomer, Let’s Talk: How My Generation Got Left Behind and The H-Spot: The Feminist Pursuit of Happiness.

I’m a reporter who has covered human rights and women’s health issues from more than a dozen countries, and a columnist who often writes on US politics and international affairs (you can find me weekly at CNN.com). I’ve been a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, have written for TIMEThe Washington PostVanity Fair, Foreign Policy, Politico, Marie Claire, the New York Review, and many others, and have contributed essays to the anthologies Nasty Women: Feminism, Resistance and Revolution in Trump’s America and Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape. My stories have looked at why women raped in conflict can’t access safe abortions; what makes Niger the country with the highest birth rate on earth; the globalization of America’s abortion wars; whether women should self-induce their own abortions; how US foreign policy and pro-life politicians squelch free speech in in the developing world; how violence against women coupled with restrictions on abortion and contraception drive migration from Central America; and many others topics.

The aim of this newsletter is to keep you informed and to tell you why these issues matter. And it’s to connect what happens in the US with the rest of the world (and vice-versa). Women are everywhere, and our experiences and struggles are intertwined.

Feminist analysis at the center of what I write. But this newsletter spans US politics and policy; popular culture; law and the courts; international affairs; and frankly whatever else is interesting at the moment.

For the time being, I’m based in Brooklyn, New York, where I also teach yoga and live with my husband, two cats, and two many plants.

You can follow me on Twitter and Instagram at @jillfilipovic.

Why subscribe?

Because you don’t want to miss anything. Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox.

Because you want even more. Paid subscribers get exclusive newsletters emailed to them, as well as the ability to comment and discuss.

Because you support independent journalism and feminist analysis. You may have heard that the media is in trouble. Newsrooms are cutting budgets. Great reporters are struggling to find work. It’s a tough time to be a journalist, and especially a freelancer. If you value the work you’re reading, and you can afford to support it, please do. And if you can’t afford a subscription, just email me — I’m happy to comp you.

Because you want to join the conversation. It can be intimidating to join the scrum of Twitter or to have a constructive conversation on social media. Here, only subscribers can comment — which means you’re joining a community of people who are invested in these issues. We may not always agree, but we’re all committed to the same goals.

Because you want to make feminist work more accessible for everyone. Paid subscribers also help to keep some of this newsletter free for everyone. So if you’re already subscribed: Thank you. I appreciate you and your support.
